April 5–7, 2018: 29th Math in Jeans Conference

The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Montpellier will host the annual MATh.en.JEANS* conference on April 5–6–7, 2018, at the Triolet Campus.

(MATh.en.JEANS: A Method for Learning Mathematical Theories by Partnering Schools to Foster a New Approach to Knowledge)

Since 1989, the MATh.en.JEANS association has been bringing mathematics to life for young people, based on the principles of mathematical research.

The association initiates and coordinates research workshops held in schools—from elementary school through college—with the participation of researchers, which recreate a scaled-down version of life in a mathematics laboratory.

It enables young people of all backgrounds and academic levels to meet researchers and engage in a genuine scientific process, encompassing both theoretical and applied aspects and, whenever possible, addressing current research topics.

In April, students present their work at the conference through lectures in the auditorium, interactive activities, and posters, and are encouraged to write up their work for online publication on the association’s website. The conference also gives participants the opportunity to meet many researchers, attend lectures, and explore mathematics in various forms

This year, the IREM in Montpellier will host some 650 people at the conference, including 550 middle and high school students from the greater Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée region, who will have the opportunity to experience mathematics at the university level.
