STEPS IN THE VES APPLICATION PROCESS
Compiling the File
Please email this application to the Student Affairs Office of the Faculty of Sciences: fds.mitra@umontpellier.fr
During a single calendar year, you may submit three VES applications for different degrees, regardless of the institution.
You may submit only one application for the same degree during the same calendar year.
Your file includes:
- Degrees, certifications earned, and certificates of training completed
- Any other supporting documents that will help the selection committee assess the nature and level of your education.
This department reviews the eligibility of your application, processes it, collects the VES application fees, and organizes the selection committee.
- Complete applications must be submitted NO LATER THAN April 30.
- The application fees do not guarantee that you will be granted the VES; they cover the administrative costs associated with the review of your application by the selection committee. Therefore, they are non-refundable, regardless of the selection committee’s decision.
Interview with the Validation Committee
The validation committee meets between early July and mid-September. It reviews your application and interviews you. It determines the knowledge and skills required to be granted equivalency for the targeted degree.
The deliberation may result in either:
- upon full validation
- partial validation
- refusal
Recommendations and advice are provided at the end of the interview.
Request Approval
The Faculty of Sciences forwards your application and the examination committee's decision to the Office of Academic Programs and Instruction (DFE).
It will send you your notification, issue your certificate of completion, and then your diploma if all requirements have been met.
If the validation is partial, it records the validated course units.
TU / LMD5 Equivalencies
We are entering a new accreditation cycle (LMD5, 2021–2026), and some of you began your studies under the previous one (LMD4, 2014–2021).
Programs change, and sometimes the credit transfer rules do as well:
Students repeating a year, in particular, may retain TU last year if they are equivalent to this year’s credits.
Students will automatically see the TU credits TU they have received equivalency, along with their grades and the associated ECTS credits, reflected in their academic contracts.
The carryover of approved semesters is not automatic. Program directors will approve these semesters on a case-by-case basis (in accordance with the new compensation rules) and request the carryover from the registrar’s office.

Innovative Student Entrepreneur Status
Innovative Student status is a program that allows eligible students to receive accommodations for their coursework and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in a traditional degree program or an apprenticeship program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, following a recommendation from the “Innovative Student” committee. Students seeking this status must demonstrate:
- enrollment in at least the third year of higher education (third year of a bachelor’s degree, third year of a BUT, engineering program, master’s degree, etc.);
- an application package that aligns with a professional and entrepreneurial goal and allows for the presentation of:
– an innovative entrepreneurial project related to one of theFeed, Care, Protect” challenges;
– a strong passion for entrepreneurship and innovation.
In addition to its academic programs, the University of Montpellier offers innovative student entrepreneurs personalized support through entrepreneurial initiatives such as INITIUM, which provide specific assistance to early-stage entrepreneurs. This support may include the following:
- Mentoring: Access to a network of mentors with experience in innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Training: Participation in workshops and seminars focused on innovative entrepreneurship, covering topics such as startup financing, intellectual property protection, and business development.
- Access to UM resources: conditional use of UM facilities, such as laboratories, research centers, and coworking spaces, for project development.
Entrepreneurial projects may involve:
- A personal entrepreneurial project: developing an innovative idea and turning it into a business venture. This project is entirely student-led.
- Leveraging Intellectual Property: Structuring a fictional or real startup to capitalize on ideas or discoveries associated with existing intellectual property owned by one or more founding members of the Montpellier PUI. This type of project provides an opportunity to practice entrepreneurship based on existing research results, even if no project leader has yet been identified.
- Participation in a research and/or technology project: joining a team of scientists within a research and/or training unit of the PUI in Montpellier, with the goal of starting a business. This project allows participants to refine an idea in preparation for potential patent protection (intellectual property) and the creation of a business.
Clarification Regarding the PEPITE National Status
The “Innovative Entrepreneur” status granted by the UM complements and enhances the national “Student Entrepreneur” status offered by PEPITE (Student Hubs for Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship), by providing specific support to students with innovative entrepreneurial projects that address the three major challenges facing our society:Feed, Care, Protect.”
However, the national student entrepreneur status granted by PEPITE does not automatically confer the status of innovative student entrepreneur at the University of Montpellier. The two statuses may nevertheless be held concurrently if, on the one hand, the innovation meets the criteria and, on the other hand, the solution addresses one of the three major challenges.
How do I qualify for Innovative Entrepreneur status?
Submit a request to the academic office where you are enrolled. You will also need to submit a form along with your application materials. Applicants are asked to provide any documents that demonstrate their connection to the entrepreneurial project.
