Active guidance in the first year
Since the start of the 2018–2019 academic year, the active academic advising program established under the ORE Act has been implemented at the Faculty of Sciences. It includes several levels to help you find the remedial resources best suited to your academic path
Succeed with the help of the guidance office
Whether it’s because you’re struggling to keep up or because you realize you don’t want to continue with this program, you may want to change your course of study. You can do so as early as the first semester through the“See the flyer”certification offered by SCUIO-IP (located on the ground floor of the Science Library).
They will help you assess your goals and skills and introduce you to the many available training programs. Did you know that some BTS and DUT programs start in January? If that’s what you’re looking for, don’t wait until the end of the academic year!
The active guidance program applies to all first-year students.
When might I need help?
● If I don’t have a science-track high school diploma…
● If I have a science-track high school diploma but low grades in science…
● If I got low scores on the ParcourSup placement tests…
● If I’ve taken a break from my studies…
● If I received a “yes, if” response…
YOU HAVE BEEN ADMITTED TO THE FIRST YEAR AT THE FACULTY OF SCIENCES IN MONTPELLIER ON A CONDITIONAL BASIS (“YES, IF”)
This response to your application is not a disciplinary action. This page explains why you received this response and how the School of Science will take steps to provide you with the resources you need to succeed this year.
The admissions committee that reviewed your ParcourSup application determined that your profile indicated potential weaknesses. These weaknesses may include the subjects you chose in your junior and senior years**, low grades in science during your junior and senior years, a break in your studies, a *non-traditional* educational background, etc.
In certain tracks (Mathematics and its Applications, Computer Science), TU will be offered to you starting in the first semester. In the other tracks, you are free to choose your courses: no options are closed to you because of your “yes, if” status; you will be in classes that mix “yes” and “yes, if” students, and you will take the same exams and quizzes.
This classification is not a punishment, much less a stigma. On the contrary, being classified as “yes, if” gives you special access to certain support services, including mentoring by master’s or junior-year students and one-on-one meetings during the first semester with faculty advisors from your academic track.
Semester 1
Early, targeted support for “yes, if” children:
- Individual meetings withthe director of studies and the lead teachers on the teaching team,
- Student mentoring foracademic or subject-specific assistance,
- In some portals,remediation TU .
Choosing a major in the second semester
Toward the end of the first semester, it will be time to take stock and start thinking about what to do next in this first year.
- If you don't have any particular difficulties, you can continue on to a standard bachelor's degree program,
- If you are facing difficulties but completing your first year in two years is a realistic possibility, some programs offer a streamlined second semester, in which standard TU are replaced byremedial course TU . This option means you will not be able to complete your first year in one year, but it allows you to build your skills so you can succeed at a more manageable pace. You will, of course, retain the TU during your first year.
The three portals offering this option are Maths and its Applications, PCSI, and SVSE (see the second-semester syllabus for each portal by clicking the links below).
=> Maths Portal
=> PCSI Portal

- If you feel that your initial choice of track was not the right one, in some cases you can arrange to switch tracks for the following year by following the internal TU as part of a lighter second-semester course load. At the end of your first year of L1, you will repeat your first year in your chosen track to complete your L1 in two years.
- If you are facing significant challenges that lead you to believe the School of Science is not the right program for you, career reorientation courses will help you make the most of your second semester and prepare your ParcourSup application under the best possible conditions. These courses are held during the first 7 weeks of the second semester so that the grades can be included in your application.
The academic staff will be there to help you choose the best path for you.
The specific features of each portal are detailed in the documents below.
