The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition) is an international synthetic biology competition organized by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) that has been held annually since 2003. This competition challenges teams of students from any country to push the boundaries of synthetic biology. These teams are multidisciplinary and work together with other fields to create an innovative product.
340 teams from around the world are participating, including 9 from Franceand 2 from Occitanie(Montpellier and Toulouse).
And this year,Montpellier is participating in the iGEM experience for the first time, supported by the CBS Laboratory.
During iGEM, students will have to create organisms using DNA fragments called biobricks and respond to issues that they themselves have raised. In November, the teams will meet at the Giant Jamboree to present their projects and results to the jury, which will take place at MIT in Boston, USA.
The Montpellier project is called: Vagineering (research on the vaginal microbiome)
Four girls and five boys, including seven at the FdS, one at the Faculty of Pharmacy, and one at the IUT.
