The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition) is an international synthetic biology competition organized by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and held annually since 2003. The competition invites teams of students from all over the world to push back the frontiers of synthetic biology. These teams are multidisciplinary, working in concert with other fields to produce an innovative product.
340 teams from around the world taking part, including 9 from France and 2from Occitanie(Montpellier and Toulouse)
And this year, Montpellier is taking part for the first time in the iGEM experiment, supported by the CBS Laboratory.
During iGEM, students will have to create organisms using DNA fragments called biobricks, and answer problems they have posed themselves. In November, the teams will meet at the Giant Jamboree to present their projects and results to the jury, which will take place at MIT in Boston, USA.
The Montpellier project is called Vagineering (work on vaginal macrobiota).
