Students Taking Charge of Their Education: The BILL (Bioinformatics Learning Lab) Educational Innovation Project

Once again this year, first-year master’s studentsin Bioinformaticsand IMHE (as well as,exceptionally, Eco-Epi) collaboratedon the BILL educational innovation project (Bioinformatics Learning Lab), under the guidance of a multidisciplinary team (Anne-Sophie Gosselin-Grenet, Jean-Christophe Avarre, Anna-Sophie Fiston-Lavier, Marie-Ka Tilak, Emira Cherif, and Clothilde Chenal).–Working in an inter-master’s working group, the students were able to apply and share the skills they acquired during their studies to teach one another through a real research project: the study of the virulence mechanisms of Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), the causative agent of carp herpesvirus disease, which emerged 20 years ago and has since spread worldwide, posing health challenges in many countries.–After extracting viral genomes from infected cultures and sequencing them using next-generation sequencing technology (in collaboration with Oxford Nanopore(R)), the students conducted bioinformatic analyses of the identified genomic variations.
