ICAP Cosmetics Students: Collaborative Cosmetics and Packaging Project

We can be proud of our ICAP Master 2 students in Cosmetic Engineering!

On February 17, students in the ICAP Master’s 2 in Cosmetic Engineering program boarded a bus bound for Saint-Germain-Laprade (Haute-Loire) to meet with students in the Master’s 2 in Packaging Engineering (Cosmetics) program at ESEPAC. In total, these 37 students, divided into five teams, participated in the first collaborative project combining cosmetics and packaging, launched in September 2021 between the Faculty of Sciences and ESEPAC. This industrial research project focused on “the development of a natural facial care product in eco-designed packaging: from concept to market launch.”

On February 18, these 37 students presented their project, “Eco-Design of Skincare Products, to a jury composed of six prominent figures from the fields of “cosmetics and packaging.”

  • Yann MORHAIN, Head of Industrialization at Parfums Christian DIOR (in person)
  • Sabina MANIGUET, Head of the LVMH Strategic Planning and Innovation Unit (remote)
  • Soline GODET, Deputy CEO of Cosmetic Valley (in person)
  • Martin FOE, Senior Manager of APTAR's Regulatory Department (in-person)
  • Mathilde GUYADET, Head of the Environmental Department at COSMED (in-person)
  • Michel SABADIE, former R&D Director at SHISEIDO, MS Cosmetics Consulting (remote)

This was the culmination of their five-month effort. Each group had 30 minutes to outline the steps they took to design their eco-friendly product (a facial care product with its packaging)—a finished, market-ready product that complies with European regulations and meets the specifications.

The entire jury highlighted the students’ professionalism and commitment to seeing their projects through to completion. Although the jury had some clear favorites, it chose not to rank the teams, given the high quality of the projects presented and the students’ dedication, despite the various challenges they faced (distance, schedules constrained by academic terms and internships, etc.).

The jury praised the project as a whole for its high level of execution: adherence to the specifications for the formulation of the proposed cosmetic products and packaging, the originality of the concept, the technical feasibility and scalability of the product, the business model, and the quality of the presentation materials.

We would like to thank all the members of the jury, as well as our suppliers and partner companies.

"The synergy of seaweed and mountain flowers. A gentle burst of freshness."

The MOUNT’N SEA group introduced us to its product “Eclat Givré,” a cooling gel. This moisturizing and soothing treatment is suitable for both men and women. One of the brand’s goals is to promote marine and mountain ecosystems. This is reflected, in particular, in the use of active ingredients such as edelweiss extract and brown algae extract. The packaging was developed entirely from recyclable materials or materials made from recycled content. Even the case was redesigned compared to standard cases to incorporate an eco-design approach.

"Unleash your tangy side! LEMON CRUSH, lemon cream gel"

PULPI introduced LEMON CRUSH, a moisturizing, refreshing, antioxidant gel-cream. This product is entirely eco-designed—from its formula to its packaging—to minimize its environmental impact.
Its formula was developed using upcycled lemon peels and vitamin C. It comes in an innovative tube made from 72% paper.

"Plump Your Skin in an Eco-Friendly Way: Plumping Serum Cream"

The Plumskin Group has introduced an eco-friendly plumping cream-serum. Its formula is innovative, thanks in particular to carefully selected eco-designed natural active ingredients and eco-extracts, as well as specially chosen upcycled oils. This cream-serum comes in eco-designed packaging: a lightweight glass bottle made from 10% recycled glass, and a case made from recycled paper and grass fiber.

"A soothing cream that enhances radiance and elegance for all men"

The Le Courtois Group has developed a product made with CBD and ingredients that are more than 99% natural. The 13 ingredients in this formula are packaged in packaging reduced to the bare minimum.

Gaëlle BUTEL, Léa DAMOTTE, Loïc DAUCHEL, Pauline ESTEVES, Annabelle LEWKOWIEZ, Zoe PHAN-DAUGAN, Alexandre RETAILLEAU.

"Anti-aging cream gel for men, for all skin types"

"Dive into the benefits of grapes!"

The ANOUVEAU Group unveiled its Winem product.
It is a gel-cream for men made with upcycled grape extracts derived from the winemaking process.
This minimalist formula adheres to Clean Beauty standards, containing 97% naturally derived ingredients. The packaging is inspired by the world of wine: a cork stopper and green recycled glass. The group chose not to use secondary packaging to limit its environmental impact, but instead designed a custom shipping crate.

Feedback:

When asked, “If this collaborative industrial research project were to be repeated,” all 37 students unanimously said they would participate again. Indeed, having this unique and enriching experience while working on this team project in a startup-style environment is a great opportunity and a springboard for the future. To develop a marketable product in just five months, the students faced numerous challenges, such as the specific constraints of each field (cosmetics and packaging) as well as those of the corporate world. The students’ dedication, the quality of their work, and their motivation demonstrate that they possess all the skills necessary to successfully transition into the workforce.
