What is the most important force in the Universe, the one that gives it its structure, forms galaxies, stars, planets and even black holes, and explains most of the history of matter in the 13.7-billion-year-old Universe? Gravitation! Tracing the history of this discovery, thisintroductory and dizzying lecture on the Universe, you'll discover how a force as simple as gravitation can be at the origin of such a wealth of matter structures in the Universe, as revealed by the largest telescopes. And how is it that astronomers, despite these successeshave been forced to hypothesize the existence of another type of matter, fundamentally different from the known matter that makes up the SunSun, Earth and living beings: so-called "dark matter" whose nature still eludes us, even though its properties are increasingly well understood.
