What is the most important force in the Universe—the one that gives it its structure, forms galaxies, stars, planets, and even black holes, and explains most of the history of matter in the 13.7-billion-year-old Universe? Gravity! Tracing the history of this discovery, thisintroductory and mind-boggling lecture on the Universe will reveal how a force as simple as gravity can give rise to such a rich variety of structures in the Universe, as revealed by the largest telescopes. And how astronomers, despite these successes, havebeen forced to hypothesize the existence of another type of matter—fundamentally different from the matter we know and that makes up theSun, Earth, or living beings: a type of matter known as “dark matter,” the nature of which still eludes us, although its properties are becoming increasingly well understood.
