What are galaxies made of? Why are there so many of them? Where do their diverse shapes come from?

In the space of a century, since the Great Shapley-Curtis Debate of 1920, astronomers thought they'd solved all the riddles of the universe's most numerous objects. But the latest space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, could well put everything back into question...
