What are galaxies made of? Why are there so many of them? Where do their diverse shapes come from?

Within a century, since the Great Debate between Shapley and Curtis in 1920, astronomers thought they had solved all the mysteries surrounding these objects, which are so numerous in the universe. And yet, the latest space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, could well call everything into question...
