January 23, 2024 - 4th Condorcet Day: secularism

The IRES Department (Institut de Recherche Pour l'Enseignement des Sciences) and the IRCL (Institut de recherche sur la Renaissance, l'âge Classique et les Lumières) invite you to the 4th Condorcet Day.

After sessions devoted to plurality voting, the place of women in science (2016), the relationship between science, morality and politics (2017), and the Anthropocene (2019), this fourth "Condorcet Day" will tackle the issue of secularism.

It is aimed at all University staff wishing to hear rigorous presentations and discuss complex issues. Four presentations will lead the day, addressing the legal, historical, political and philosophical aspects of secularism.

Since 2016, the IRES department (formerly DESciRE) of the Montpellier Faculty of Sciences, and the Institut de recherche sur la Renaissance, l'âge Classique et les Lumières (IRCL, UMR5186 CNRS-Université Paul-Valéry), have been organizing study days devoted to contemporary issues. These meetings have been named "Condorcet Day" to reflect the rational spirit of the conferences and debates. The organizers believe that the topical nature of these issues should not be used as a pretext to indulge in militant shortcuts or partisan reductions.
