January 23, 2024 – 4th Condorcet Day: Secularism

The IRES (Institute for Research on Science Education) and the IRCL (Institute for Research on the Renaissance, the Classical Age, and the Enlightenment) invite you to the 4th Condorcet Day.
Following sessions on first-past-the-post voting, the role of women in science (2016), the relationship between science, ethics, and politics (2017), and the Anthropocene (2019), this fourth “Condorcet Day” will address the issue of secularism.
It is open to all University staff members interested in attending in-depth presentations and discussing complex issues. Four presentations will be given throughout the day, exploring the concept of secularism from legal, historical, political, and philosophical perspectives.
Since 2016, the IRES department (formerly DESciRE) of the Faculty of Sciences at Montpellier and the Institute for Research on the Renaissance, the Classical Age, and the Enlightenment (IRCL, UMR5186 CNRS-Paul-Valéry University) have been organizing study days devoted to contemporary issues. These events have been named “Condorcet Day” to reflect the rational spirit in which the lectures and debates are conducted. The organizers believe that the contemporary nature of these issues should not serve as a pretext for reducing them to simplistic political slogans or partisan oversimplifications.
