The IDIL Graduate Program: Training Through Research
The IDIL (Interdisciplinary In-Lab) graduate program aims to train
students through research using innovative teaching methods.
Taught entirely in English, the IDIL master’s programs cover a wide
range of disciplines and are offered by six different departments at
the University of Montpellier.
The IDIL programs are based on four fundamental pillars:
- Hands-on Learning in the Lab: Students participate in immersive laboratory courses (at more than 100 partner laboratories in Montpellier). They also complete two 6-month internships during their program, in their first and second years of the master’s degree.
Customized Curriculum: Each student designs their own academic path based on their academic background, career goals, and interests, choosing from three types of courses:“Non-Core,”“In-Lab,” and“Transversal.” Personalized academic advising is provided to guide students in their choices and ensure that their curriculum aligns with their career goals.- Interdisciplinary Focus: All IDIL students must select a“Non-Core”course, which is an introductory course in a new discipline. For example, an ecology student might take an introductory course in political science.
- Personalized mentoring: Each student is supported throughout their program by a researcher who serves as a mentor in their field, imparting knowledge, practical skills, and professional development. This mentor plays a key role in preparing and supporting the student’s research internship, providing personalized supplementary instruction in the student’s discipline, and helping them build a professional network.
