The IDIL Graduate Program: Training Through Research
The IDIL (Interdisciplinary In-Lab) graduate program aims to train
students through research using innovative teaching methods.
Taught entirely in English, the IDIL master’s programs cover a wide
range of disciplines and are offered by six different departments at
the University of Montpellier.
The IDIL programs are based on four fundamental pillars:
- Hands-On Learning in the Lab: Students participate in immersive laboratory courses (at more than 100 partner laboratories in Montpellier). They also complete two 6-month internships during their program, in their first and second years of the master’s program.
- Customized Curriculum: Each student designs their own academic path based on their
career goals and interests, choosing from three types of course units:“Non-Core,”“In-Lab,” and“Transversal.” Tailored support is provided to guide students in their choices and ensure that their curriculum aligns as closely as possible with their career goals. - Interdisciplinary Exposure: All IDIL students must choose a course designated as“Non-Core,” which is an introductory course in a new discipline. For example, a student majoring in ecology might take an introductory course in political science.
- Personalized Mentoring: Each student is supported throughout their program by a researcher “mentor” in their field, who imparts “knowledge,” “skills,” and “interpersonal skills.” The mentor thus plays a key role in preparing and supporting the research internship, providing personalized supplementary instruction in the student’s field, and helping the student develop a professional network.
