3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Opening ceremony for the Jiyuu Hugo Sarrade Scholarship
“Jiyuu” means “Freedom” in Japanese. This scholarship was established in January 2016 at the initiative of Stéphane Sarrade in memory of his son Hugo, a 23-year-old man who was a victim of the attacks that struck France on November 13, 2015.
Worth 5,000 euros, this scholarship supports a student wishing to complete an internship in Japan to further their scientific education. It is intended for a student at the FdS or Polytech enrolled either in a Master’s program in science (regardless of the field) or at the Polytech School of Engineering.
3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Presentation on International Relations by the Faculty of Sciences
5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – Lecture by Dimitri Despierres – The America’s Cup: From Archimedes-Style Boats to Flying Boats
After a brief overview of the history of the America’s Cup, we will explore how, in just a few years, the teams
The participants in this legendary race have transformed the face of sailing, making it accessible even to the average person, by shifting boats from Archimedes-style propulsion to winged (lift-based) propulsion.
The session will explore the value of computer simulation and the significant role that science plays in the design of these "Formula 1s of the seas."
Finally, we will look at a specific example that traces the technological choices made for the 2013 event in San Francisco and the 2017 event in Bermuda.
