"The America's Cup: From Archimedes-Style Boats to Flying Boats"
After a brief historical overview of the America's Cup, we will explain how, in just a few years, the teams
The sailors participating in this legendary race have transformed the face of sailing, even making it accessible to the average person, by shifting boats from Archimedean mode to flying (lifted) mode.
The session will explore the value of computer simulation and the significant role that science plays in the design of these “Formula 1s of the seas.”
Finally, we will look at a concrete example that traces the technological choices made for the 2013 event in San Francisco and the 2017 event in Bermuda.
