February 14, 2019: First Science Bar

The first Science Bar of the season will take place on Thursday, February 14 at 8:30 p.m. on the theme: "Wine yesterday, today, and tomorrow—geology, archaeology, climate change."

The season opens with an evening dedicated to wine. This beverage, closely linked to the history of human ingenuity, has been present throughout the greatest civilizations of Antiquity. Vines and wine have always been an important part of Western societies... But from amphorae to bottles, wines have changed considerably!
Today, the impact of climate change on vineyards is no longer a matter of debate and is causing major upheaval throughout the industry. With significant socio-economic challenges at stake, the entire sector must adapt. Ultimately, what wines will we be drinking in the coming decades?

This unprecedented science-society debate brings together five researchers:
=> Bruno Blondin, Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vine and Wine at Montpellier SupAgro
=> Hervé Hannin, Director of Development at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vine and Wine at Montpellier SupAgro
=> Claude Raynaud, Director of Research at the Laboratory of Archaeology of Mediterranean Societies (CNRS – Paul-Valéry Montpellier University)
=> Michel Séranne, Researcher at the Geosciences Laboratory (CNRS – Montpellier University)
=> Jean-Marc Touzard, Director of Research at INRA, Deputy Director of the Innovation and Development in Agriculture and Food Unit (INRA – CIRAD – Montpellier SupAgro).

Special evening celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Science Bar!

Science and technology are increasingly present in our daily lives; discussing them is a democratic act.

Human encounters, a mix of disciplines, a clash of cultures, an exchange of views... The polar opposite of a formal conference, the Bar des Sciences is an invitation to exchange ideas between scientists and specialists in a given subject and the general public.
Co-produced by the University of Montpellier and COMUE Languedoc-Roussillon Universités, in partnership with INSERM, IRD, and IRSTEA, the Bar des Sciences in Montpellier offers a privileged venue for civic debate that strengthens the dialogue between science and society.
The season is organized with the invaluable assistance of Brasserie le Dôme, Radio Aviva, Brain Awareness Week, and Pint of Science.
