A new teaching department in the Faculty of Science

Founded in 1971, the Institut de Recherche en Enseignement des Mathématiques (IREM) de Montpellier became the Institut de Recherche pour l'Enseignement des Sciences (IRES) in 2021, extending its original missions of research into mathematics teaching and continuing education for mathematics teachers to other scientific disciplines (Physics-Chemistry, Life and Earth Sciences, Digital and Computer Sciences, Astrophysics, etc.). The Montpellier IRES is part of the national GIS ADIREM network, which groups and coordinates all IREMs and IRESs throughout France.

The IRES becomes a Department of the FdS and implements its missions in conjunction with the other Departments of the FdS and with other UM components involved in teacher training: Faculty of Education (FdE) and Institut national supérieur du professorat et de l'éducation Languedoc-Roussillon (INSPE-LR). Its main missions are :

=> the pedagogical coordination of initial training (Master Didactique des Sciences and L3 Licence Sciences et Technologie) and continuing education in science for primary, secondary and higher education teachers, which it implements in conjunction with the relevant departments of the Rectorat de l'Académie de Montpellier.

=> Research on science teaching through action-research groups bringing together researchers or teacher-researchers and teachers at all levels. This research is carried out in conjunction with the UM's research laboratories, the Science Inspectorates and the relevant departments of the Montpellier Education Authority.

=> promote and disseminate the resources produced, and make them available to schools (students and professionals concerned) and to the general public as soon as possible.
