A new academic department at the School of Science

Founded in 1971, the Institute for Research in Mathematics Education (IREM) in Montpellier evolved in 2021 into the Institute for Research in Science Education (IRES), expanding its original missions—research on mathematics education and continuing education for mathematics teachers—to include other scientific disciplines (Physics and Chemistry, Life and Earth Sciences, Digital and Computer Sciences, Astrophysics, etc.). The IRES in Montpellier is part of the national GIS ADIREM network, which brings together and coordinates all IREMs and IRES located throughout France.

The IRES has become a department within the FdS and carries out its missions in collaboration with the other departments of the FdS and with the other units of the University involved in teacher education: the Faculty of Education (FdE) and the Languedoc-Roussillon National Institute for Teacher Training and Education (INSPE-LR). Its main missions are:

=> the academic coordination of initial teacher training (Master’s in Science Education and the Bachelor’s in Science and Technology) and continuing education programs in science for elementary, secondary, and higher education teachers, which it implements in collaboration with the relevant departments of the Montpellier Academy’s Office of Education.

=> Research on science education conducted through action research groups that bring together researchers, faculty researchers, and teachers at all levels. This research is carried out in collaboration with the university’s research laboratories, the Academic Inspectorates for Science, and the relevant departments of the Montpellier Academy’s Rectorate.

=> promoting and disseminating the resources produced and making them available to school communities (students and relevant professionals) as well as to the general public as soon as possible.
