Call for Papers: CEESES

Conference on Teaching Social and Environmental Issues in Higher Education

https://ceeses2026.sciencesconf.org/

In the face of socio-ecological upheavals, higher education plays a vital role both in educating students about these issues and in preparing future professionals for the transitions ahead.

The conference CEESES 2026 is a continuation of previous initiatives (ETES, SEESEES) and aims to build on this momentum of collaborative training between higher education and research professionals, through two main areas of focus:

  • opportunities for discussion, sharing, and exchanging experiences;
  • opportunities for disciplinary exchange led by guest experts.

The aim of the conference is to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and to encourage each participant to engage with all disciplines. The conference is open to anyone involved in or interested in teaching socio-ecological issues at the higher education level: faculty members, trainers, instructional designers, doctoral students, educational support staff, program directors, and institutional stakeholders.

GUIDELINES:

Through presentations by experts and other contributions, the CEESES conference aims to foster critical reflection on some of the followingissues :

1 – ISociety-environment interdependencies:

  • needs for food, energy, water, and housing;
  • systemic perspectives on the interrelationships between the environment and health, between biodiversity and climate, etc.

2 – Science, Technology, and Society:

  • geoengineering and techno-solutionism;
  • digital technology and artificial intelligence (including the use of these tools in higher education);
  • values and conflicts of values (how the current socio-ecological context is challenging disciplinary content and practices);
  • media outlets that promote climate denial;
  • advances in low-tech;
  • eco-design.

3 – Socioeconomic Models and Legal Frameworks for Transition: Economic and Legal Approaches Through the Concept of Degrowth and Environmental Law.

4 – Timeframes, narratives, and transformative perspectives:

  •  retrospective and prospective;
  •  environmental history;
  • Indigenous and decolonial perspectives;
  • ideas for a more modest but nonetheless promising future.

5 – Teaching methods, pedagogical approaches, and training programs:

  • contributions from the fields of education and training regarding the pedagogical aspects of teaching socio-ecological issues;
  • an overview of the resources available for this course;
  • transformative educational approaches that enable the (re)building of the network of relationships between people, societies, and the environment.

CALL FOR CALL FOR:

In addition to invited experts, a broader call for participation focused on teaching and training in socio-ecological issues is now open. Submissions may address the themes listed below (in line with theconference’s stated objectives mentioned above) or cover other topics of your choice.

The themes for the call for papers include:

  • experiments in implementing TU programs TU TEDS (Ecological Transition for Sustainable Development): pedagogical choices, alternative teaching methods, organization of TU, scaling up, training of trainers, logistical aspects;
  • the integration of socio-ecological issues into training programs and subject-specific instruction: hybrid approaches, interdisciplinarity, didactic and pedagogical aspects, support, and obstacles;
  • training programs for the jobs of tomorrow, "disruptive" training programs, and interdisciplinary training programs.

We welcome contributions from all disciplines, including the experimental sciences, formal sciences, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, education and training sciences, and engineering sciences, regarding teaching and training on socio-ecological issues.

There are three submission formats available.

1) Interactive workshop

The goal is the active participation of all workshop registrants, which may require some preparatory work on the part of the participants. The format is open-ended. The proposal should clearly state the intent regarding the teaching, training, or resource in TEDS (theme, intended objective), the facilitation methods, the requirements (indoor space, outdoor setting, etc.), and the minimum and maximum number of participants, if applicable. Please indicate the desired duration: 1.5 hours or 3 hours.

2) Individual communication

A 10-minute individual presentation leading to a discussion may be proposed. This presentation may take the form of a report on experiences teaching TEDS on a specific topic or a presentation of emerging research that helps develop a didactic, pedagogical, or training perspective on TEDS.

3) Poster

Posters that showcase innovative approaches to teaching TEDS and/or encourage reflective analysis of these experiments, as well as research on teaching methods and educational resources.

SUBMISSION FORMAT

For workshops and presentations, the recommended length for the proposal abstract is approximately 3,000 characters, including, if possible, 3 references.

For posters, a one-page summary of the content and main sections is required, including three references.
