"From the Lab to the Classroom": Researchers and Teachers Join Forces to Bring Science into the Classroom

This Monday, October 5, 60 teachers from middle schools, high schools, and agricultural high schools, as well as 13 researchers and faculty members, are gathering for their final working session at the Hydropolis facility on the University of Montpellier’s Pharmacy campus.

This meeting marks an important milestone in the collaborative project “From the Lab to the Classroom, ” an initiative aimed at transforming recent scientific articles into educational resources that can be directly used in high schools. By bringing together researchers and teachers around a common goal, the project promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge to the educational community.

For this third volume, the chosen theme is water, with a wide range of particularly diverse and timely research topics: pesticide contamination of surface water, river restoration, aquifer dynamics, monitoring epidemics through wastewater, the impact of invasive species on fisheries, and changes in the Gulf Stream in the context of climate change.

Of the 13 researchers and faculty members involved, six are from the Faculty of Sciences, in the Biology-Ecology and Earth-Water-Environment departments. We extend our warmest thanks to Christelle Batiot, Delphine Bonnet, Valérie Borrell-Estupina, Yann Leredde, Mathieu Sicard, and Marine Rousseau for their involvement in this project, as well as for their essential role in scientific and academic coordination.

This partnership offers teachers the opportunity to engage directly with experts in their field, access leading scientific publications, and explore the best ways to adapt this knowledge for their students. Researchers, for their part, ensure the scientific rigor and integrity of the content throughout the process of making it accessible to a broader audience, while teachers contribute their pedagogical expertise and understanding of school-age audiences.

By strengthening the ties between research and education, “From the Lab to the Classroom” is an exemplary initiative that helps enrich teaching practices and encourages younger generations to embrace scientific knowledge.

A big thank you to all the partners involved in this project: the University of Montpellier (Faculty of Sciences and the IRES Department), the Montpellier School District, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, the APBG (Association of Biology and Geology Teachers), and the UNESCO International Center on Water in Montpellier (ICIREWARD).

The project will now move on to the final proofreading and editing phases, in collaboration with the APBG, before Volume 3 is distributed to secondary schools under the National Education system and agricultural education institutions.

The project’s core team: Marine Rousseau (UM Professor), Patrice Fabre (IA-IPR in Life and Earth Sciences, Montpellier School District), Fabien Ius (Educational Inspector in Biology and Ecology), David Boudeau (President of the APBG), and Mathieu Sicard (UM Professor).
