Studying Abroad Through an Exchange Program

Exchange programs allow students enrolled at a foreign university to continue their studies at the University of Montpellier for up to one year, subject to the terms and conditions of the program. The period of study at the University of Montpellier must be an integral part of the students’ degree program at their home university. It must be recognized and credited toward their degree.

=> You must be enrolled at a university with which the University of Montpellier has established a partnership that includes student exchange programs
=> You must contact the International Relations Office at your home university to submit your application. This office will provide you with all the necessary information about exchange programs.
=> You must be nominated by your university. Once you have been selected, your university will need to provide us with your name, contact information, field of study, and the duration of your stay.
=> You should contact the RI representative for the Faculty of Sciences based on your major: See the list of representatives at the bottom of the page
=> The Office of International Relations at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Montpellier will send you the steps to follow.
=>Exchange periods:
– 1st semester (fall semester): early September through mid-January
– 2nd semester (spring semester)
Choosing Your Classes
You must choose courses that correspond to your degree program and that you are taking at your home university, in consultation with your academic advisor, before your departure. If you pass the exams, these courses must be recognized by your home university upon your return.
The vast majority of courses are taught in French (with the exception of courses focused on learning other languages). You must meet the language proficiency requirements set by the Faculty of Sciences:
Level B1 or B2, depending on the program.

Academic Programs Offered by the Faculty of Sciences
=> You must list the courses you have chosen on the study plan, specifying the exact course titles and the number of credits.
2/ Contact the academic advisor to find out about the options available for your chosen major

=>If you are coming through the Erasmus+ program, you must earn a total of 30 ECTS credits per semester. Students from non-European universities are not required to earn 30 ECTS credits. For a full semester, they are advised to take between 5 and 7 courses per semester.
=> Your study contract must be completed and signed by you and your academic advisor. It must be submitted to the Faculty of Sciences along with your application materials.

=> Sometimes your study plan may be modified once you are enrolled in the Faculty of Sciences. These changes are generally due to scheduling conflicts (classes held at the same time). You will make these changes with the approval of the faculty member responsible for your studies in the Faculty of Sciences. Any changes must be approved by the faculty member who signed your original study plan.
Student Responsibilities
As an exchange student, you have certain responsibilities:
=> Remain enrolled at your home university during your stay at the Faculty of Sciences
=> Obtain approval from your home university for the study plan you wish to follow at the Faculty of Sciences. Your study plan must be detailed in a study agreement and include three signatures: yours, that of your academic advisor at your home university, and that of your academic advisor at the Faculty of Sciences
=> Have at least a B1 or B2 level in the language of instruction for the selected courses
=> Meet the deadlines for submitting or sending the documents requested by the Faculty of Sciences’ Office of International Relations (BRI)
=> Report to the BRI before you leave the Faculty of Sciences, once you have completed your

French as a Foreign Language
Most courses in the Faculty of Sciences are taught in French.
Before beginning your studies, it is essential to have a good command of French, both written and spoken.
Students in exchange programs will be able to take French classes at the Faculty of Sciences.
Depending on the results obtained, students may be awarded 2 to 5 ECTS credits by their home university.
To register, you will need to contact the International Relations Office upon your arrival.
