Did you know?
- Six out of 10 students are victims of or witnesses to at least one form of sexism, LGBT+phobia, or sexual violence (source: Observatory on Sexist and Sexual Violence in Higher Education and Research, 2023 report).
- More than 1 in 5 men aged 25–34 consider it normal to earn more than a female colleague in the same position (source: High Council for Gender Equality (HCE), 2024).
- Among men, masculinist attitudes persist: one-quarter of men aged 25–34 believe that violence is sometimes necessary to earn respect. (Source: HCE, 2024).
- 29% of men aged 25–34 believe that men perform better in scientific careers (source: HCE, 2024).
What are we talking about?
- Sexism refers to all behaviors— whether conscious or unconscious—based on gender stereotypes. Sexism can manifest itself in seemingly harmless acts intended to belittle women, such as jokes or remarks suggesting that women are less competent.
- Gender-based and sexual violence (GBV) encompasses various degrees of severity, ranging from gender-based abuse to rape. It is defined by the Penal Code and is punishable by a fine or imprisonment.
Because the higher education sector is, unfortunately, not free from sexist incidents, the UM has developed a specific guide to provide the best possible support to victims of sexist and sexual violence.

Other devices outside the UM
The Cnaé is a support system that provides a listening ear, guidance, and a way to report issues for students experiencing distress, violence, or discrimination.
