Did you know?
- Six out of ten students are victims of or witnesses to at least one form of sexism, LGBT+phobia, or sexual violence (source: Observatory on Sexist and Sexual Violence in Higher Education and Research, 2023 report).
- More than one in five men aged 25–34 consider it normal to earn more than a female colleague in the same position (source: High Council for Gender Equality (HCE), 2024).
- Among men, traditionalist attitudes persist: one in four men aged 25–34 believes that violence is sometimes necessary to command respect. (Source: HCE, 2024).
- 29% of men aged 25–34 believe that men perform better in scientific careers (source: HCE, 2024).
What are we talking about?
- Sexism refers to all behaviors, whether conscious or unconscious, that are based on gender stereotypes. Sexism can manifest itself in seemingly harmless acts intended to belittle women, such as jokes or remarks suggesting that women are less capable.
- Gender-based and sexual violence (GBV) encompasses a range of offenses, from gender-based harassment to rape. These acts are defined by the Penal Code and are punishable by a fine or imprisonment.
Because the higher education sector is, unfortunately, not immune to sexist incidents, the University of Marseille has developed a specific guide to provide the best possible support to victims of sexist and sexual violence.
Have you witnessed or experienced an act of violence, discrimination, harassment, or sexist behavior? Report it!
